No. 5 Softball Downs Simon Fraser
April 21, 1999
SEATTLE--The fifth-ranked Washington softball team scored seven runs in the first inning and recorded its 20th shutout of the season in defeating Simon Fraser, an NAIA member, 10-0 on Tuesday at Husky Softball Stadium. UW improves to 34-11, while the SFU falls to 25-4.
The Huskies sent 12 batters to the plate in the opening frame, converting seven hits, five stolen bases and four errors into seven runs. Junior Rosie Leutzinger doubled to begin the game, followed by a walk by sophomore Kelly Hauxhurst. Leutzinger scored on a passed ball and an error and Hauxhurst stole second before sophomore Kim DePaul singled Hauxhurst to third. A hit by senior Becky Newbry sent Hauxhurst home and DePaul to third after she stole second. Junior Jennifer Spediacci singled DePaul home and Newbry to third after another stolen base, and then Newbry stole home as Spediacci stole second. Junior Melissa Downs' double knocked in Spediacci, and Downs moved to third on a single by junior Jeanine Giordano. Leutzinger reached first on an error which allowed Downs to score, and then Hauxhurst's single put Leutzinger on third. Another error allowed Leutzinger to score for the final run of the inning.
Junior Jamie Graves led off the third frame with a double to left center field and crossed home plate on a Giordano single. The fourth frame saw Newbry single and come home off a long single by freshman Shannon Walsh.
All four of UW's pitchers saw action from the mound. Graves opened and was relieved by Spediacci in the fourth, who threw two innings. Freshmen Bridget Wilcox and Shannon Walsh then pitched the sixth and seventh innings, respectively. Graves had three strikeouts, Spediacci had five and Wilcox two.
