April 20, 1999
SEATTLE - The fourth-ranked Washington softball team defeated Division II member Western Washington, 3-0 and 4-2, at Husky Softball Stadium. Junior Jamie Graves pitched a no-hitter and faced the minimum in the first game through six innings before giving up a single in the seventh. UW improves to 33-11 overall and will host Simon Fraser in a doubleheader tomorrow at 2 p.m.
In the opener, senior Becky Newbry tripled to lead off the second inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Jennifer Spediacci. Another run came the next frame when sophomore Kelly Hauxhurst reached first on a fielder's choice, moved to second on another fielder's choice by sophomore Kim DePaul, and scored on a Newbry single. Spediacci then tripled to lead off the sixth and was hit home by junior Melissa Downs. Graves struck out five batters in the win.
Western Washington scored two runs in the fourth inning of the next game off a single, a triple and two sacrifices. But the Huskies answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own. Spediacci singled and moved to second on Down's fielder's choice. Both scored when freshman Shannon Walsh doubled to the center field wall.
UW took the lead for good in the fifth when junior Rosie Leutzinger walked and DePaul homered for the second straight game. Spediacci recorded nine strikeouts in six innings, with freshman Bridget Wilcox throwing the last inning for the save.
