April 17, 1999 CORVALLIS, Ore.- The fourth-ranked Washington softball team was swept by No. 12 Oregon State, losing two low-scoring outings in the bottom of the final inning on Saturday, 1-0 in nine innings and 2-1. The Huskies fall to 29-11 overall and 5-6 in the Pac-10, while the Beavers are 37-12 and 8-4.
Washington will face No. 14 Oregon in a doubleheader in Eugene on Sunday. Both games will be broadcast live on KSRB-AM 1150, and Fox Sports Northwest will tape delay the opener next Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
UW and OSU played eight-and-a-half scoreless innings in the opener. Junior Jamie Graves struck out three and pitched a hitless game until the bottom of the ninth, facing two over the minimum until two Beaver singles and a UW error allowed the winning run to cross the plate. The Huskies scattered six hits over the nine innings.
Oregon State scored first in the second game, when a single and two Husky errors allowed a run to cross in the fifth inning. But Washington came back in the next frame to score on a single by junior Rosie Leutzinger and a double by sophomore Kelly Hauxhurst. But OSU's Kim Herman led off the sixth with a shot over the left field fence to give the Beavers their 2-1 advantage.
Junior Jennifer Spediacci struck out six in the complete-game loss, giving up six hits and one earned run. Game One Washington 000 000 000 0 6 2 Oregon State 000 000 001 1 2 1Game Two Washington 000 001 0 1 3 2 Oregon State 000 011 x 2 6 1 |
