Huskies Come Away with Split against Arizona State

April 10, 1999

SEATTLE - The fourth-ranked Husky softball team and No. 7 Arizona State each won a 1-0 game on Saturday at Husky Softball Stadium, but the Sun Devils needed eight innings to down the Huskies in the nightcap. UW, now 26-8 overall and 4-3 in the Pac-10 on the season, will host No. 2 Arizona tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Wildcats were swept by No. 1 UCLA today.

In the opener, Washington scored early when sophomore Kim DePaul singled in the first inning, with senior Becky Newbry's triple to the right center wall knocking DePaul home. But UW collected just two more hits in the game, both in the third inning, and were retired in order in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth frames.

Junior Jamie Graves (16-4) collected her fifth straight win, allowing three hits, striking out one and walking none in the complete-game shutout.

The second game evolved into a pitcher's dual, scoreless through the seventh. ASU's Kirstin Voak (18-5) struck out 12 and allowed just one hit in the game, while the Sun Devils managed five hits off UW's Jennifer Spediacci. ASU got a walk and a steal in the eighth inning before a double to left field by Nichole Thompson provided the winning run. Spediacci (9-4) had four strikeouts.
