Softball Sweeps Western Washington
April 7, 1998
SEATTLE -- The Washington softball team, tied for fourth in the nation in the latest poll, won both games of a doubleheader against Western Washington on Tuesday, 3-1 and 1-0, at Husky Softball Stadium. Both teams combined to score three runs in the first inning of the opening game. The Vikings' leadoff batter, Jen Brandolini, walked and stole second before Cathy Johnson's single sent Brandolini home for their only run of the day. UW answered with its first two batters crossing home plate. Sophomore Rosie Leutzinger and sophomore Erin Helgeland singled and freshman Kim DePaul's sacrifice bunt helped each advance. Senior Eve Gaw's hit scored Leutzinger and landed on first on an error, and then junior Becky Newbry singled home Helgeland. The Huskies came back in the fourth to score again. Freshman Christie Rosenblad doubled to lead off the frame and scored on an error. Sophomore Jennifer Spediacci pitched the full seven innings, striking out nine batters and giving up only two hits. The only score in the nightcap came in the fourth. Gaw singled, and pinch runner Angela Bennett crossed home plate because of an error. Sophomore Jamie Graves also pitched a complete game, struck out three batters and gave up three hits.
