Jamie Graves picks up
a win against ASU.

April 3, 1998

SEATTLE--The fourth-ranked Washington softball team took two from No. 7 Arizona State on Friday in Tempe, winning 5-1 and 3-0 in games that the Huskies dominated both at the plate and on the mound. UW improves to 25-6 overall and 4-2 in Pac-10 play, while ASU falls to 26-10 and 2-4. UW will face top-ranked Arizona tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Washington exploded in the third inning of the opener to score four runs off three hits. Freshman Christie Rosenblad led off by walking and sophomore Rosie Leutzinger singled before sophomore Jamie Graves knocked a shot to second base and some creative base running ensued. Rosenblad started heading home and seemingly was caught between the catcher and third baseman. Somehow she made it back to third safely, but by that time Leutzinger also was at that bag. As Leutzinger scampered back to second, Rosenblad took off for home plate and slid past the catcher, while Leutzinger returned to third and Graves made it to second on a fielders choice. Freshman Kim DePaul then singled and senior Eve Gaw blasted a shot to right field for a two-RBI double.

In the sixth, the Huskies added another when junior Jeanine Giordano doubled, Rosenblads single sent pinch runner Denia Pisia to third and a hit by freshman Kelly Hauxhurst slid between short and third helped Pisia cross home plate. Although the Sun Devils put two on the board that same inning, they never threatened the lead.

Sophomore Jamie Graves (10-2) added another win to her record in her seventh complete game of the year, striking out two and allowing only four hits.

In the nightcap, out-of-the-park home runs by junior Jami Nyblod in the second and freshman Kim DePaul in the third put the Huskies up early. DePauls shot also drove in freshman Kelly Hauxhurst, who had singled, for the third run. Sophomore Jennifer Spediacci threw a complete game one-hitter, improving to 10-3 on the season and striking out three.
