No. 3 Softball Drops a Pair to Cal

SEATTLE--The 19th-ranked Golden Bears from California swept No. 3 Washington, 6-4 and 3-0, before 737 fans at Husky Softball Stadium on Sunday. UW falls to 21-6 and 2-2 in the Pac-10, while Cal improves to 22-13 and 2-2. The Golden Bears started off with a bang, collecting three runs off three hits in the opening frame. They added another in the fourth and two more in the sixth before the Huskies mounted a furious rally. UW led off the sixth inning with three singles by senior Eve Gaw and juniors Becky Newbry and Jami Nyblod while sophomore Jennifer Spediacci walked. The four base runners scored, including sophomore Angela Bennett, who pinch ran for Gaw. Freshman Denia Pisia had one RBI and sophomore Rosie Leutzinger collected two. The Huskies left two runners on in the seventh, unable to finish the rally. Spediacci (9-3) took the loss for UW, and Gaw relieved her in the fifth. In the second game, the Huskies managed only four hits scattered between four different innings but was unable to convert any to a run. Cals first run came off a passed ball in the fifth, and two more in the sixth to end the scoring. Sophomore Jamie Graves (8-2) had the loss for UW, pitching a complete game.
