Softball Downs Cal in Game One of Doubleheader
March 28, 1999
SEATTLE - The fifth-ranked Washington softball began 15 innings on Sunday against No. 13 Cal at Husky Softball Stadium but came away with just one result. The Huskies needed eight innings in the first game to beat the Golden Bears, 2-1, but rain forced a suspension of a scoreless second game in the top of the seventh. That game will resume at 1 p.m. on Monday. UW scored first in the opener, which began a half-hour late because of rain. Sophomore Kim DePaul singled to start the fourth inning and advanced to second on a passed ball. A single by junior Jennifer Spediacci allowed DePaul to cross home plate. That lead lasted just half an inning, however, as Cal scored off a triple and a single. The Huskies left two on in the bottom of the seventh, and Cal had two on in sixth, seventh and eighth frames, but neither team could score. That changed for Washington in the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore Kelly Hauxhurst hit her second single of the game, and DePaul sacrificed her to second. Senior Becky Newbry then sent her second pitch almost to the right center wall for a double and the game-winning RBI. Junior Jamie Graves pitched the complete game, striking out six. In the second game, Cal had collected six hits to UW's three, but neither team could convert them to runs. The game will resume with Candice Harper on first after she walked and Amber Phillips at the plate with a full count.
