Fourth-Ranked Softball Advance In Kia Klassic

March 20, 1999

FULLERTON, Calif. -- The Washington softball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Kia Klassic on Friday evening with a 4-1 win over Liberty (12-13). The Huskies, now 21-4 on the season, will face No. 7 Southwestern Louisiana on Saturday at 1 p.m.

UW scored first in the second inning when senior Becky Newbry singled, stole second and was hit home by junior Melissa Downs' singled. Liberty equaled the score in the top of the fourth, but the Huskies added another in the bottom of the inning. Downs reached second on a fielder's choice and error, pinch runner Jessica Bork advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then she scored when junior Jennifer Spediacci singled to left center.

Washington added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on three hits. Newbry and Downs singled before a Spediacci double sent both home for the final 4-1 count.
