No. 4 Softball Falls To UNLV, 5-3, In Kia Klassic
Huskies take on Liberty in first round of playoffs.

March 19, 1999

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Washington softball team dropped its final pool-play game to UNLV, 5-3, on the second day of the Kia Klassic. The Huskies, 20-4, take on Liberty tonight in the first round of playoffs.

Junior Jennifer Spediacci (9-1) retired the first 11 batters in order, including striking out five, before the Rebels mounted a two-out rally in the fourth. After a single and two walks, UNLV's Geney Orris grand slam broke open a scoreless game.

The Huskies came back in the sixth to put three runs on the board. Sophomore Kim DePaul and senior Becky Newbry singled and then scored on a double to right center by junior Melissa Downs. Spediacci also doubled to send pinch runner Becky Simpson home, but the rally ended there for the Huskies.

UNLV got another run in the bottom of the sixth off an error, a sacrifice and a long single to make it 5-3. UW then put the tying runs on first and second but could not get around the bases.
