March 19, 1999
FULLERTON, Calif. - The Washington softball team completed a first-day shutout at the Kia Klassic, downing Florida 7-0 after defeating No. 5 Oklahoma 4-0 earlier in the day. The Huskies face UNLV tomorrow at 1 p.m. in their final competition in pool play. UW scored three runs in both the first and second innings in their third defeat of the Gators this season. Sophomore Kelly Hauxhurst doubled in the opening frame and advanced to third on a past ball as sophomore Kim DePaul walked. Then both moved up, with Hauxhurst scoring, on a wild pitch while senior Becky Newbry was at bat before she reached first on a walk. Junior Erin Helgeland then singled to right field to collect two RBI in DePaul and Newbry. In the next inning, sophomore Christie Rosenblad walked and junior Rosie Leutzinger bunted successfully before both advanced twice on a wild pitch, with Rosenblad scoring. Leutzinger and DePaul, who walked again, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Newbry. Washington's final run came in the third off three hits. Helgeland singled and junior Jamie Graves moved her to third on a single down the left field line. Graves landed on second on a fielder's choice, and a single by Hauxhurst to left field sent Helgeland home. Graves (10-3) pitched five innings, striking out seven, before freshman Bridget Wilcox finished the game, recording one strikeout.
