March 7, 1999
FULLERTON, Calif. - The Husky softball team, ranked fourth in the nation, completed a sweep of two Easton Showcase Tournament opponents on Saturday, shutting out Pacific, 3-0, and Santa Clara, 8-0. The run-rule game against the Broncos ended with back-to-back home runs by senior Becky Newbry and junior Melissa Downs. UW improves to 17-2 on the season and 4-0 in the tournament, which concludes tomorrow. The Huskies face Illinois State at 9 a.m. and Northwestern at 11 a.m. Both games will be broadcast live on KSRB-AM 1150. Against Pacific, junior Rosie Leutzinger and sophomore Kelly Hauxhurst led off the first inning with singles and then stole a base before sophomore Kim DePaul's sacrifice to center scored Leutzinger for UW to go up 1-0. Another single run came in the third frame after Hauxhurst walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice by DePaul and came home off a single to left field. In the fourth inning, junior Jennifer Spediacci bunted to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by junior Erin Helgeland. She then scored on a shot to the left field fence by freshman Shannon Walsh. Spediacci went the distance for her third complete game of the year and improved to 8-0 while recording five strikeouts. Washington scored twice in the first inning against Santa Clara. Hauxhurst and Newbry singled, with Hauxhurst crossing home plate and Newbry landing on second off a fielder's choice. Newbry then stole third, and Melissa Downs' single helped her home. One more run came in the fourth when junior Erin Helgeland doubled, and freshman Shannon Walsh singled to right field to put Helgeland across the plate. But the Husky bats exploded in the fifth frame. Leutzinger was hit by a pitch and stole second. Hauxhurst singled and stole second to put batters on second and third. DePaul singled to right and reached third on an error while Leutzinger and Hauxhurst scored. Then Newbry and Downs ended the game with homers over the left center field fence. Graves (8-2) allowed just one hit and struck out seven in her fourth complete game of the season.
