Huskies Rally For Second Pre-Season Tournament Championship

STOCKTON, Calif. - In the Louisville Slugger Invitational Championship game in Stockton, Calif., Sunday afternoon, the No. 4/3 UW softball team (19-1) defeated Pacific (9-8) 6-4 to earn its second pre-season tournament championship.
UW took a 2-0 lead in the third with two outs. With one out, junior starting catcher Lindsay Monk (Menifee, Calif.) walked and was thrown out at the plate. Sophomore's Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) and Marki Creger-Zier scored on a single by sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.).
Monk got an RBI in the fourth, driving in senior Taylor Smith (Olympia, Wash.) who singled to lead off the inning.
Pacific cut the lead to one at 3-2 in the top of the fifth as Alexi Johnson and Megan Foglesong scored on a double to left center by Megan Hom. Hom scored the tying run on a single up the middle by Nikki Armagost.
In the top of the sixth, Pacific took a 4-3 lead as Foglesong scored on a groundout after a double.
UW was the home team being the top seed in the tournament and came back for a three-run inning of its own in the sixth. Monk and freshman Courtney Gano (West Covina, Calif.) scored on a throwing error by the shortstop and Hayward scored on an error by the pitcher.
Sophomore Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.), coming off of her no-hitter on Friday vs. Delaware, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and had seven strikeouts in 6.0.Walker got the win, improving to 4-1 on the year. Inglesby pitched the final inning for UW, allowing only one walk.
Dani Bonnet was the pitcher of record for the Tigers. She allowed six runs, three earned, on seven hits with four walks and one strikeout in 5.2 innings. Tori Shepard pitched the final out of the sixth.
Pacific had eight hits in the game while UW had seven, led by Hayward and Monk with two each.
UW will play at home for the first time in 2012, hosting the Husky Softball Classic March 10-11 that features the Huskies, Seattle U and North Dakota.
