Softball Finds Success at NFCA Leadoff Classic
Feb. 28, 1998 COLUMBUS, Ga.-- The second-ranked Washington softball team completed pool play undefeated at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga., on Saturday, with two narrow wins. The Huskies slid past Auburn, 1-0, and then came from behind to down No. 18 Minnesota, 2-1. UW is now 12-2 and will compete in the playoffs tomorrow. Freshman Christie Rosenblad knocked in the only run of the first game in the second inning, bringing home junior Becky Newbry after she doubled and then stole second. Senior pitcher Eve Gaw pitched a one-hitter and faced only three Tigers more than the minimum. Minnesota scored first in the second game. After four innings in which the pitchers held the hitters at bay, the Gophers struck first on a series of walks and errors by the UW defense in the top of the fifth. The Huskies then finally got on the scoreboard. Senior Leah Francis reached first on an error and then stole second before sophomore Jeanine Giordano brought her home with a double. Sophomore Angela Bennett, pinch running for Giordano, crossed home plate on another error. Sophomores Jamie Graves earned the win, with help from classmate Jennifer Spediacci in the fifth inning. Graves held UM to two hits and had no earned runs to up her record to 4-0. Game One Auburn 000 000 0 0 1 0 Washington 010 000 x 1 3 2
