Huskies Conclude Tournament Play With Win

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The No. 5/7 Washington softball team concluded play in the Cathedral City Classic with a 6-3 victory over No. 22/22 Nebraska on Sunday afternoon. UW improves to 14-1 on the year while handing Nebraska its second loss of the season at the hands of the Huskies.
Sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) improved to 8-0 in the circle making the start and earning the complete game victory, She also got the first victory over the Huskers to open the season in Tempe, Ariz.
UW took the early 3-2 lead after the first inning and would get one run in the fourth and two more in the seventh.
Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) was the leadoff hitter for the day for UW. The sophomore walked to begin the game. After Inglesby walked and senior Nikia Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) reached on an error, Hayward scored the first run from third on a wild pitch.
A single by senior Taylor Smith (Olympia, Wash.) drove in the final two Husky runs of the inning.
In the bottom of the first, Nebraska cut the lead to one as Nikki Haget scored after reaching on an error and Taylor Edwards scored on a second Husky error. Both runs were unearned.
The Huskies got two insurance runs in the seventh for Inglesby. A single by senior Jenna Clifton (Glendale, Ariz.) drove in sophomore pinch runner Kelli Suguro (Kent, Wash.). Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.).
Smith led the Huskies with two of the five team hits. Five different Huskies scored runs in the game.
In the circle, Inglesby allowed one earned run, three total runs, on four hits and had six strikeouts. Ashley Hagemann was the losing pitcher for the Huskers. She allowed eight walks and five hits in the complete game.
UW heads to Stockton, Calif., next weekend to play in a tournament hosted by the University of Pacific.
