February 21, 1999
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The fourth-ranked Husky softball team downed Virginia Tech, 5-0, on Sunday to win the Louisville Slugger Classic. UW swept No. 5 Michigan and No. 20 Florida earlier in the tournament. Washington, now 9-1, next competes in the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga., Feb. 26-28. Junior Jennifer Spediacci and freshman Bridget Wilcox shared the shutout. Spediacci allowed just one hit and struck out three in four innings before Wilcox relieved her in the fifth, facing the minimum and recording four whiffs. Senior Becky Newbry and sophomore Kim DePaul combined to go 5-for-6 at the plate, with four extra-base hits. That duo led off the scoring in the first and third frames, with back-to-back doubles to score DePaul. DePaul led off the third with another double, and Newbry followed that with a triple. Newbry scored on an error by the catcher on a hit by freshman Shannon Walsh. Spediacci's single then drove in pinch runner Gina Brewer. One more run came in the sixth inning. Junior Rosie Leutzinger led off with a double and then rounded the bases on a DePaul single.
