Stanchek Throws Complete Game Shutout
Feb. 18, 2012
SAN DIEGO - Freshman Kasey Stanchek earned her second career start in as many days and earned the complete game shutout as the No. 7/9 Huskies (8-0) defeated UC Santa Barbara (1-8) 9-0 in five innings Saturday afternoon.
Stanchek allowed just one hit in the game, in the first inning, and from there, struck out four and allowed just one walk. She is 2-0 on the season after earning the win vs. San Diego last night.
"We played great defense and it's great as a pitcher to have an offense that never quits," Stanchek said. "It was a great team effort today and everyone contributed."
UW scored three runs in the first, second and fourth innings on 13 hits. Senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) had three hits, two runs and a stolen base in the game. Fellow senior Nikia Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) also had three hits, two RBIs and a run. Sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) was the designated player for the game and had one run, one hit and three RBIs. Junior Jerrin Fa'asua (Oceanside, Calif.) got the start at third base and had two hits and two RBIs.
"Our offense really clicked today," said Pohlman. "We did a really great job of coming out strong and fast. We started out getting girls on then driving the ball to score runs. Kasey pitched awesome. It was a great team win."
Pohlman scored in the first after leading off the inning with a single and a stolen base. Inglesby doubled to right center followed by a double from Williams for the first three RBIs of the game.
In the second, the dreadful illegal pitch haunted UCSB as sophomore Mark Creger-Zier (Steilacoom, Wash.) scored on one for the 4-0 lead. Pohlman scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Inglesby and a triple by Williams drove in sophomore Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.).
In the fourth, a single up the middle by Fa'asua drove in two. A ground out by Creger-Zier drove in freshman Kelli Suguro (Kent, Wash.) for the final run of the game.
UW will play its fourth game in San Diego against Boise State tonight at 7 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.gohuskies.com.
