UW Softball Team Downs Central Arizona, 14-2
Feb. 8, 1998 CASA GRANDE, Ariz.--The No. 3 Washington softball team completed its exhibition games by thrashing Central Arizona, 14-2, in 10 innings of play. The originally scheduled 14-inning game was called during the 10th inning because of heavy rains. Senior Eve Gaw was the winning pitcher, going five innings, allowing no runs and striking out four batters. Junior Becky Newbry led UW at the plate. She was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple, scoring three times and knocking in two runners. Senior Leah Francis and freshman Kelly Hauxhurst both belted balls over the fence. Washington will return to Arizona next weekend to officially open its season in the Coca-Cola Classic, facing three ranked opponents (No. 12 Massachusetts, No. 21 Florida State, and No. 25 Tennessee) and three teams which received votes in the preseason poll (CS Fullerton, Purdue and Texas).
