PHOENIX--The third-ranked Washington Husky softball team downed Phoenix College, 8-1, on Friday in an exhibition game in Phoenix. Sophomore Jamie Graves, who pitched the first five innings, was credited with the win.
Phoenix College scored first in the third inning when Lindsey Blake drove in Katie Kesler, who made it to first on an error and advanced to the next two bases on sacrifice hits. Junior Becky Newbry crossed home plate in the fourth inning for UW's first score. After singling to center field, she stole second and advanced to third on a fielder's choice before freshman Kim DePaul doubled to collect the RBI. Sophomore Jamie Graves then drove in DePaul with a single.
Washington earned two more runs in the eighth frame. DePaul knocked in sophomore Rosie Leutzinger and then crossed the plate herself off a passed ball. Two innings later Newbry scored off an error, and then freshman Kelly Hauxhurst drove in sophomore Erin Helgeland from second base. The final two scores came back-to-back in the 12th frame. Senior Leah Francis knocked in Newbry and then junior Jami Nyblod drove in Francis.
Junior first baseman Becky Newbry led the Huskies in hitting, going 3-for-6 with three runs. DePaul was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. UW successfully stole 10 of 11 bases, with Francis' 3-for-3 leading the way.
The Huskies will take on NJCAA champion Central Arizona on Sunday in Case Grande, Ariz., in their final exhibition game before officially beginning the season next weekend at the Coca-Cola Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
