Softball Falls to No. 2 Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Husky softball team jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead against No. 2 Arizona in the title game of the Pepsi Arizona Classic on Sunday, but the Wildcats came back in front of 1,578 fans for the 3-2 win. Washington's two runs came in the opening inning with its seventh home run of the young season. Junior Rosie Leutzinger singled to begin the game and was sacrificed to second by junior Erin Helgeland. Freshman Jenny Topping then blasted her third homer in as many games to give UW a quick 2-0 lead. The Wildcats wasted no time evening the score, crossing home plate twice in the first inning themselves on a sacrifice by Lauren Bauer and an RBI single by Chrissy Gil. UA then scored the winning run in the fifth. Nicole Giordano led off with an infield single, was sacrificed to second by Katie Swan, moved to third on a ground ball and scored on Lindsey Collins' single to right field. Junior Jamie Graves (2-1) took the loss for UW after relieving Jennifer Spediacci in the middle of the fourth inning.
