No. 4 Huskies Win Two More at Pepsi Arizona Classic
February 6, 1999
TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 4 Washington easily put away 24th-ranked Illinois-Chicago in a doubleheader at the Pepsi Arizona Classic on Saturday. The Huskies run-ruled UIC, 9-0, in five innings in the first outing before dominating 8-1 in the second. UW, now 4-0, will face host Arizona in a single game on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the tournament title.
In the first game, junior Jennifer Spediacci and freshman Bridget Wilcox combined for their second shutout of the season. Spediacci whiffed seven batters in six innings, allowing two hits in the first inning before facing the minimum number of batters through the fourth frame. Wilcox also faced just three batters in the fifth inning.
The Huskies jumped out on top quickly when freshman Jenny Topping slammed her second home run of the season over the center field fence to drive in junior Erin Helgeland, who had walked. In the third frame, junior Rosie Leutzinger singled, stole second and third, and crossed home plate on an errant throw to third by the catcher.
UW then exploded with six hits and six runs in the fourth inning. Senior Becky Newbry and sophomore Kim DePaul each doubled to begin the hitting clinic, with Newbry scoring. Spediacci reached first on an error, and pinch runner Becky Simpson stole second before junior Melissa Downs' single helped Simpson round the bases. Leutzinger popped the ball over the left fielder's head for a triple that drove in Simpson. Sophomore Kelly Hauxhurst singled Leutzinger home and scored herself off a Topping single.
In the second game, three more Huskies knocked the ball over the fence to put UW's season total at six after hitting just 15 last year. Junior Jamie Graves held the Flames hitless through six innings, striking out three, before Wilcox finished the game.
Washington didn't score until the fourth inning but made up for it thereafter. Topping drew one of her four walks in the game, and Simpson, running for Topping, scored on freshman Shannon Walsh's first homer of the year. In the fifth inning, Leutzinger and Hauxhurst singled and advaned a base on a wild pitch. Helgeland sacrificed Leutzinger home, and Newbry's shot to right field brought Hauxhurst around the bags.
The seventh inning began with a home run by Helgeland and a base on balls by Topping. Newbry singled, making DePaul's shot over the left center fence an two-RBI homer. The Flames got on the board in the bottom of the seventh off three singles.
