Feb. 7, 2013
HONOLULU - The No. 16/16 UW softball team is 1-0 after a season-opening win over St. Mary's, 8-0 in six innings Thursday afternoon in Honolulu, Hawai'i as a part of the Paradise Softball Classic.
Washington will face UAB at 5 p.m. PT. Live stats are available on www.gohuskies.com.
The Huskies improved to 7-0 all-time against St. Mary's in their first meeting since 1996.
Junior Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) got the start and looked great going the distance, allowing just two hits and striking out seven.
The Husky offense scored at least once in five of the six innings. The game ended after six innings due to the run-rule which means if a team is up eight runs or more after five innings the game is called. The UW led 5-0 after five innings and score three times in the sixth to earn the victory.
Senior Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) and juniors Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.), Hooch Fagaly (Chino, Calif.), Kelli Suguro (Kent, Wash.) and Whitney Jones (Upland, Calif.) had two each hits and the Huskies as a team had 12.
Fagaly got the Huskies on the board in the first with a two-run home run to center with Hayward on base after a bunt single.
In the second, Suguro hit her first career double down the right field line. Wright walked on four pitches and Jones singled to left to load the bases for the top of the order. Hayward drew a walk to drive in Suguro to make it 3-0 after two.
Junior Marki Creger-Zier (Steilacoom, Wash.) scored on a single by Wright and then a throwing error by the Gaels third baseman to increase the lead to 4-0.
Wright led off the sixth with a solo home run to left field to make it 6-0. Jones doubled to right and Hayward singled and advanced to second. Freshman Jennie McNeill (Simi Valley, Calif.) drove in a run and Fagaly doubled to right which brought in the winning run.
Defensively the Huskies turned two double plays.
Jessica Lemmon was the pitcher of record for St. Mary's, allowing three earned runs on six hits in 4.0 innings of work.
