SEATTLE - There is no question that the UW women's soccer team has one of the toughest schedules in the country. The Dawgs have handled the pressure well early on and this weekend, the competition gets even tougher.

Washington will head to the Portland/Nike Invitational at the University of Portland this weekend and will face Penn State at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and No. 24 Rutgers on Sunday at noon. Both games will be on Merlo Field and live stats can be found at www.portlandpilots.com.

Fans can chat with www.gohuskies.com live via Cover It Live during the Penn State game. The link will be made available on the front page of the website prior to the start of the game. Fans are encouraged to ask questions about the game and Husky women's soccer.

Scouting Penn State
Penn State began the season ranked No. 13, but after losing three-straight games the Nittany Lions have dropped out of the top 25 and into receiving votes in the NSCAA poll. They are 1-3-1 after winning their first game of the season in overtime at West Virginia. Since then, they have tied Virginia and dropped matches to William and Mary, Yale and Connecticut. They are led by Hayley Brock who has two goals and one assists. Danielle Toney also has two goals, six on goal. Krissy Tribbett has been the goalkeeper all season, allowing eight goals and making 13 saves. Erica Walsh is in her fourth season as head coach of the Nittany Lions. She has led them to three-straight NCAA Tournaments and has compiled 48 wins in her career there. This will be the fourth meeting between Penn State and Washington, with the Huskies leading the series 2-1. UW won the first two meetings in 1995 (5-0) and in 2004 (2-1), both in the Husky/Nike Invitational. Penn State won the last meeting, 3-2, on their home field. This will be the first-ever neutral game between these two games.

Scouting Rutgers
Rutgers also started the season ranked at No. 18 and the Scarlet Knights are hanging in the NSCAA poll at No. 24 this week. They are 4-1 with the lone loss coming to Monmouth in game three of the season. Rutgers is riding a two-game winning streak after shutting out both opponents last week, Princeton (2-0) and Bucknell (3-0). Jonelle Filigno leads the way with three goals and 10 shots on goal. Tricia DiPaolo has a team-high two assists. The goalkeeper is Emmy Simpkins who has three shutouts, 10 saves and has only allowed two goals. Glenn Crooks enters his 11th season as head coach and has led the Scarlett Knights to five NCAA Tournaments bids and 10-straight Big East Championships. This will be the third meeting between UW and Rutgers with the series being tied 1-1. Rutgers won the first meeting, 4-3, in 1997 in Seattle while UW returned the favor and defeated Rutgers on their home field, 3-1, in 1998.

Deines Earns MVP Honors
Junior captain Kate Deines was named the Offensive MVP for the Husky/Nike Invitational. She had three goals in Friday's 4-0 victory over Syracuse, becoming just the 17th Husky in school history to score three or more goals in a single game and the first since Melissa Bennett scored three goals vs. USC on Nov. 10, 2002. Two of her goals were on penalty kicks in the 18th and 49th minutes and her third goal was off of a corner kick in the 19th minute. Her first goal of the game was her first of the season. Her three goals in the game equaled her goal total from the entire 2009 season.

Dawgs Finish Second in Husky/Nike Invite
The Huskies went 1-0-1 in the Husky/Nike Invitational placing second behind No. 4 Portland (2-0). Wisconsin finished third at 0-1-1 and Syracuse was fourth at 0-2. UW handily defeated Syracuse 4-0 in the first game, scoring twice in each half. In the second game, Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead in the first half before the Dawgs rallied to tie the match, 1-1, off of a header by Kendyl Pele. After two 10 minute overtime periods, the game ended in a tie.

Team Effort Gives Dawgs Victory at UMass
The Huskies improved to 2-0 on the year for the third-straight season in impressive fashion at UMass. The Dawgs shutout the Minutewomen 3-0 with three goals and three assists from six different players. Kellye Joswick, McKenna Waitley and Kelsea Brajkovich each had goals while the assists came from Jane Mitchell, Lindsay Elston and Annie Sittauer. UW took 15 total shots that came 11 different players. Junior Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann earned her first career start as a Husky and picked up her first win and shutout. She also recorded five saves in the match.

Joswick Returns With a Bang
Redshirt senior Kellye Joswick couldn't have scripted her return to the field any better. She scored the lone goal in the 78th minute as the Huskies defeated Seattle University, 1-0 to open the season. Joswick missed all of 2009 after a season-ending ACL tear in the fourth minute of the season-opener vs. Seattle. After working hard in the offseason to get back to the field, she got the start and took a ball from Sarah Martinez to the far post for the goal.

Go Huskies!
