Huskies To Host Annual Husky/Nike Invitational
Aug. 28, 2012
With the first road test under its belt, the women's soccer team will make its 2012 home debut by hosting the Husky/Nike Invitational featuring No. 20 Portland, LaSalle and Fresno State, Friday and Sunday. UW is to 3-0 on the season, its best start by a Husky team since the 2008 team went 7-0 to start the season. This was also the first time under head coach Lesle Gallimore and first since 1991 that the first three Husky games of the season were on the road at an opponent's field, not at home or at a neutral site. UW is 21-9-4 in its own tournament since it began in 1999. Each year the Huskies and Pilots play in others tournaments but not usually against each other, as is the case this weekend. Portland is No. 20 in this week's NSCAA poll and ranked 23rd by Soccer America. The Pilots are 29-4-1 all-time in the UW tournament, winning the title a year ago. LaSalle is the second team under the receiving vote's category in the NSCAA top 25 poll. In the Soccer America poll they moved up to No. 22 after not being ranked last week. They are 2-0 on the year after upsetting nationally ranked West Virginia in the season opener. UW and LaSalle have never met in women's soccer. Fresno State was in the Husky/Nike Invitational in 2003 going 0-2. UW downed the Bulldogs 3-0 in that first and only meeting between the two. The Bulldogs will be looking for their first win this weekend at 0-2-2. Husky freshman Katey Fawcett made her Husky debut last week on the road. She is the daughter of former Olympian and two-time gold medalist, Joy Fawcett. Joy will be signing autographs for fans at 6:15 p.m., prior to Washington's Friday night game vs. LaSalle. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
