Aug. 9, 2012
SEATTLE - UW superstar goalkeeper Hope Solo (1999-2002) helped the USA Women's National Team to its third-straight gold medal and fourth overall in five games with a 2-1 victory over Japan Thursday night at Wembley Stadium in London, England. This is the third gold medal for Solo as well who was an alternate on the 2004 Olympic team and the starter in the 2008 Olympics in which both teams also won gold. Carli Lloyd scored in the eighth and 54th minutes for the Americans, who lost to the Japanese in penalty kicks at last year's World Cup final. Yuki Ogimi scored in the 63rd minute for Japan. The match drew 80,203 fans to Wembley Stadium, breaking the record for a women's soccer game at the Olympics. The US went undefeated in its quest for the gold, defeating France, Columbia, DPR Korea, New Zealand, Canada and Japan. Solo allowed just six goals in the tournament, the second fewest by a goalkeeper in the tournament that played the maximum of six games. This makes the second gold medal for Husky Olympians in London and the seventh total. |
