Huskies Open Training Ahead Of 2012 Season

Aug. 2, 2012

SEATTLE - The 2012 season is officially underway as the Husky women's soccer team began preparations for the coming season with its first practice of the year today.

Head coach Lesle Gallimore, in her 19th year in charge of the Huskies, has plenty of reasons for excitement as the team prepares for the season opener, just 15 days from today.

"We have a lot of talent from top to bottom on our roster," says Gallimore. "Our players have been working hard in the off-season and we have changed some of our training methods and revamped our overall model of periodization.

"So I'll be very interested to see how that translates this season."

Many of the returning players gained valuable experience this summer playing with several club teams and women's leagues including the Issaquah Soccer Club, Emerald City Football Club, and the Sounders Women. Coach Gallimore is hopeful that this experience will help with the soccer "sharpness" early in the season.

The Huskies also have a few talented newcomers that are expected to contribute immediately, including the No. 2 ranked midfielder in the country, Isabel Farrel (Bellevue, Wash.), and the No. 6 ranked defender, McKenzie Karas (Las Vegas, Nev.).

Gallimore and her staff intend on working diligently early on to get everyone on the same page as quickly as possible in hopes of starting the year off strong.

Despite the fact that this will be Coach Gallimore's 19th season as the head of the UW women's soccer program, she still gets excited like it's her first year.

"It's my favorite time of year and I always feel like this is my first season all over again, I just get giddy to get things going with the team."

The Huskies open the 2012 season Aug. 17 at Seattle University at 4:00 p.m. The first home match of the season comes on Aug. 31, the first day of the Husky/Nike Invitational, when the UW plays host to LaSalle.
