UW-Notre Dame Match Moved To Seattle
July 31, 2012
SEATTLE - The UW women's soccer match vs. Notre Dame has been moved to Seattle and will be played at Husky Soccer Field.
The match, previously scheduled to be played in Portland, Ore., will kick off at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 9. The UW was originally supposed to participate in the University of Portland's annual tournament that weekend, but after the fourth team (other than UW, Portland and Notre Dame) dropped out, the UW had been set to play the Irish in a neutral-site match in Portland.
"We were as disappointed as the University of Portland when the fourth team in their annual Invitational dropped out late in March," UW head coach Lesle Gallimore explained. "We were extremely fortunate to be able to pick up a match at Gonzaga [Sept. 7], but that was going to have us travel to Spokane and then to Portland for a neutral Sunday match vs. perennial power Notre Dame. Portland was willing to host the game despite not having a match themselves.
"Thanks to our administration working with Notre Dame's administration," Gallimore continued, "we were able to bring the game home to Seattle where we will now have an eighth home contest on what is still a road-heavy schedule. I think both teams will benefit from playing in a more energized environment. I'm grateful to the staff at Notre Dame for agreeing, and to our staff for putting the deal together."
The Huskies, who begin full-squad practices this Thursday, open the 2012 season Aug. 17 at Seattle University. The first home match of the season comes on Aug. 31, the first day of the Husky/Nike Invitational, when the UW plays host to LaSalle.
