SEATTLE -Husky associate head coach Amy Griffin has developed many goalkeepers refine their skills over the years, including recent graduate Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann and Husky legend Hope Solo. Griffin divides her time between assisting the Huskies and helping train the goalkeepers on the U20 Women’s National Team. The U20 WNT is currently playing in the CONCACAF Championships, where the girls won their group after three consecutive 6-0 shutouts. In the first game, Guatemala had one shot on goal, which was easily saved by keeper Bryane Heaberlin. In the following games against Cuba and Panama, neither team had a shot on goal, allowing the US keepers to record a clean sheet throughout the group stage. By winning Group B, the U20 team advanced to the semi-final stage Friday vs. Mexico and with the win automatically qualified for the World Cup in Japan later this year. They will also play in the championship game vs. Canada on Sunday. This is Griffin’s third year working as an assistant for Youth World Qualifying teams. She served as the goalkeeper coach for the U17 WNT for two years, leading the team to a silver medal in the 2008 World Cup.
