Fifth-Ranked UConn Drops UW Women's Soccer Squad
September 25, 1998 PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Forward Mary-Frances Monroe scored the first goal and assisted on the other three Friday, lifting fifth-ranked Connecticut to a 4-1 victory over Washington in the first round of the Rutgers Classic womens soccer tournament. Connecticut (8-0) took control early, tallying three goals inside the first 17 minutes. Monroe scored off a rebound at 6:02. She assisted Margaret Tietjen at 12:47 and Jen Carlson at 16:40. Carlson scored again at 80:07 off a cross from Monroe. Lauren Molinaro also distributed three assists for UConn. Washington (2-5) suffered its third lost to a top-10 ranked opponent. The UW got on the scoreboard at 55:26 as sophomore Theresa Wagner, a product of Seattles Lakeside High School, blasted in a rebound from 18 yards away. Sophomore goalkeeper Leslie Weeks registered five saves for Washington while UConns Anne-Elizabeth Eskerud denied three shots.
