SEATTLE - Junior forward Katy Dowling's 77th-minute goal lifted the Washington women to a 1-0 victory over New Mexico, Friday in the final game of the Pac-10/Mountain West Challenge at Husky Soccer Field. Washington (5-5) placed second in the tournament. The 23rd-ranked Brigham Young women (7-1-1) tied Washington State 1-1 to secure the tournament title. New Mexico (5-4) finished third in the standings by virtue of a 1-0 win Thursday over fourth-place WSU (5-3-2). BYU midfielder Katie Larkin was voted the tournament's Offensive Most Valuable Player while UW's Katie Hall (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville) received the Defensive MVP award. The Huskies were held scoreless in the tournament before Dowling netted a six-yard shot from right of the goal mouth. Sophomore Jenna Robison (Livermore, Calif.) initiated the scoring play with a pass to sophomore Melissa Beal (Portland, Ore.) who spun and flicked a short pass to Dowling (Laguna Beach, Calif.) for the game-winner at 76:30. "Tonight it was one of those things where we got some chances and we stuck one. It was great," exclaimed Coach Lesle Gallimore whose Huskies lost 1-0, Thursday to BYU despite an 18-11 shooting advantage. Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen (Gig Harbor, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) preserved UW's victory with seven saves, including a stop on a point-blank, 85th-minute blast by Krista Peterson. Shannon Adragna registered two saves for the Lobos who out shot UW 15-11. In Friday's first game, Brigham Young got a goal with 2:29 left in regulation to tie Washington State 1-1. WSU scored late in the first half on a goal by Katie Fellows. She placed a 17-yard shot from the right side of the box into the far left corner at 41:14. Anna Miller and Carly Dobratz were credited with assists on the score. BYU equalized at 87:31 when Angela Fajardo collected a long pass from Kelsea Kakadelas and capped a 25-yard breakaway with a 10-yard shot past goalkeeper Amber Wittmers. The teams then played two scoreless overtimes, settling for a tie. Wittmers collected four saves for WSU, which was out shot 18-10. BYU goalkeeper Erika Woodbury also made four saves. The Huskies resume action next weekend, visiting defending national champion Portland on Friday, Sept. 29. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Merlo Field. NCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER
