UW Selected to Host 2009 Gym Regional
June 5, 2007
SEATTLE - The National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Committee announced Tuesday that the University of Washington has been selected to host the 2009 NCAA Women's Gymnastics West Regional Championships at Bank of America Arena. Washington was among 12 schools announced as regional and national meet hosts in either 2008, 2009 or 2010.
"The committee was extremely pleased to receive several attractive bids for both the regionals and national championships, each presenting exciting opportunities for the future participants," said Christie Purks, chair of the Women's Gymnastics Committee and Associate Director of Event Management at the University of Georgia.
The selection could hardly come at a better time for Washington's gymnastics program, which is currently riding the momentum of an outstanding 2007 season under first-year head coach Joanne Bowers. Sophomore Ashley Houghting won the Pac-10 vault title and was named to the All-Pac-10 team, and senior Chelsea Bakken qualified for the national championships in the all-around. In addition, Bowers was named West Region and co-Pac-10 Coach of the Year, the first Husky coach ever to sweep those honors.
In addition to hosting the regional meet in 2009, Washington will also host the Pac-10 Championships next spring, and hopes to host other championship meets in the near future.
"This is really a great honor for our program, our fans, our facility, and especially for our department, which has earned a reputation for hosting first-class championship events," Bowers said. "Bank of America Arena is such a beautiful facility in which to compete, and our fans are so knowledgeable and supportive. To be able to compete at home at Pac-10s next year and at Regionals in 2009 is going to be a huge plus for us in our effort to continue building this program back up to where it should be."
The 2009 NCAA West Regional will be the third held at Bank of America Arena, which also hosted regionals in 2003 and 2005. Washington placed third in both of those meets, just one spot shy of an automatic team berth at the NCAA Championships.
