UW Gymnastics Giving Back To The Community
Feb. 7, 2012
SEATTLE - After a long night at the meet against Oregon State University the night before, the Washington Gymnastics team had the great opportunity to help out at the Muscular Dystrophy Walk in Puyallup, Wash. The team arrived at South Hill Mall for the start of the event at 8 a.m. and got put into different stations. Junior Meg Whitney and sophomore Aliza Vaccher paired up at the team poster station, where all the participating groups made their team signs for the walk. "This station was perfect for both Meg and Aliza," junior Kylie Sharp, the community service leader for the team, said, "for those of you who don't know Aliza, you can open up her backpack and find about 100 bright colored pens and markers for class... let's just say her class notes are never the same color." Juniors Paige Bixler, Lauren Rogers and Sharp worked at the hair dye station. Bixler, the "hair and makeup artist for every meet," was the designated hair dyer while Rogers and Sharp were in charge of keeping the dye off of people's faces and clothes. In the process of making posters and coloring hair, the GymDawgs ran into a few other Huskies. The UW Volleyball team came to volunteer at the event as well as Harry the Husky. After taking a break, posing for pictures and even dying volleyball player Kylin Munoz's hair, the girls went right back to work for the rest of the day. "We all had such a great time volunteering and were happy to help out with such a great cause," Sharp said. "It is one of the most amazing feelings when you get to see the faces of young kids light up when you have made their day with something as simple as coloring their hair. "Even just being able to make some of the people at this walk smile we knew we had made their day so much better, not to mention it made our day so much better, too." The gymnastics team has their next home meet against Louisiana State University and Seattle Pacific University Friday, February 17 at 7 p.m., where the sophomore and freshmen class will be signing their trading cards at the meet. |
