Husky Gymnasts Compete In Intrasquad
Nov. 24, 2008
SEATTLE - The Husky gymnastics team competed in its fall tune-up in preparation for the winter season Monday night in the Bank of America Arena, splitting into two teams for its annual intrasquad meet.
The Gold team, comprised of senior Ashley Houghting, sophomore Samantha Walior and freshmen Hatsune Akaogi, Amanda Cline and Anna Epps, emerged victorious, posting meet-high scores on all four events. Houghting was the top-finisher on the vault for the Gold team, and took top honors on the floor. Akaogi took first-place accolades on bars tied with Houghting for first on beam for the Gold.
"Ashley [Houghting] had a great night," said head coach Joanne Bowers. "Hatsune [Akaogi] had a really good night. And I was really pleased with Anna [Epps] on beam."
The Purple team, consisting of senior Kelly Gilbert, sophomores Haley Bogart, Karen Cain and Kristen Linton and freshmen Lauren Eller and Ruby Engreitz, also turned in strong performances. Bogart was the top finisher on vault for Purple, with Linton taking top honors on the bars. Gilbert picked up a pair of wins, earning first-place finishes on beam and floor.
"Kelly [Gilbert] was really aggressive on beam tonight, which is something we've been working on," said Bowers. "Kristen [Linton] is coming along very nicely. Haley [Bogart] and Samantha [Walior] are both coming off really good freshman seasons. They're not quite as sharp as they need to be, but I have every confidence that they will be by January, because they've proven they can do it."
Houghting and Bogart were the top two all-around performers, for Gold and Purple, respectively.
"For as early as this meet as for us, I'm cautiously optimistic about our season in January," said Bowers. "I think we had a few girls really step up tonight and show that they're ready for competition. The freshmen got a lot of nerves out of the way tonight. Our goal was to get our young ones down in the arena in front of a friendly crowd to show them that they can do it. We still have an awful lot of work to do, but we also have a lot of time."
The Huskies are off until January 9, when they play host to Alaska-Anchorage at 7pm. For the complete schedule and ticket information, log on to GoHuskies.com.
