Husky Gymnasts Tumble at Oregon State
Huskies suffer first loss of young season.

Jan. 30, 1998

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The 14th-ranked Washington women's gymnastics team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 16th-ranked Oregon State 193.5 to 191.8 before a crowd of 4,992 at Gill Coliseum. The Huskies dropped to 4-1 this year while the Beavers improved to 4-0. Both teams posted their highest scores of the season in the meet.

Washington's only individual event winner was Klara Kudilkova, who tied for first on vault with OSU's Lara Degenhardt, with a 9.850 score. Junior Tiffany Simpson, who won the all-around at Washington's first two meets, placed second overall with a score of 38.8. Oregon State's Megan Murphy won the all-around competition with a score of 38.95.

Washington was far from its form of a year ago when the Huskies upset the Beavers en route to recording the highest team score (196.775) in the history of the program. Washington's lineup was not at full strength this time around. Sophomore Rhyan Pelander did not compete due to a strained neck while all-arounder Jamie Stauffer missed the floor exercise due to a strained achilles tendon.

The victory was especially gradifying for first-year Beaver coach Tanya Chaplin. She was an assistant coach at Washington the past seven seasons.

Washington will travel to 19th-ranked Arizona next Friday for a meet that also features California and Illinois-Chicago.
