Record-Holding Kim Leads No. 1 Huskies Back To Stanford
Oct. 18, 2012
SEATTLE -- Washington, ranked No. 1 by Golfweekand No. 2 by Golfstat.com, returns to action this week at Stanford Golf Course for the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Condoleeza Rice.
They are hoping to continue riding a wave of success that has seen them accumulate a 43-1 overall record, two wins and a second-place finish. In order to remain on top, UW may need to ride the hot hand of one of its top golfers returning to the scene of one of their finest moments.
As a freshman playing in just her third collegiate event, Kim shot a tournament record 13-under 200 to win the 2011 version of the Stanford Intercollegiate. She had been winless since before breaking out last week with a dominating 11-under 204 - the lowest score in the 31 year history of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational.
She won at Sahalee Country Club by 12 strokes while competing as an individual. Kim won't have to worry about that this week as Coach Mary Lou Mulflur inserted her back into the lineup. Kim will be joined by Charlotte Thomas, Cyd Okino, Ying Luo and Kelli Bowers, who all earned roster spots via team qualifying.
The Huskies will have a tall task ahead this week as the field is loaded with some of the top teams in the nation. Out of the 17-team field, 10 are ranked in Golfstat's top 25 -- and this does not include UCLA, which entered the year as the No. 1 squad.
Joining the Huskies will be the host Stanford Cardinal (ranked 32nd by Golfstat.com), Arizona (1), Arizona State (7), California (44), Georgia (11), Harvard (47), Oklahoma State (15), Oregon (40), Oregon State (72), Pepperdine (19), San Jose State (70), Texas (8), UC Davis (4), UCLA (45), USC (3) and Vanderbilt (13). So far this year, the only team to beat Washington head-to-head has been Arizona.
The format of the tournament is 54-holes, with 18 holes played over three days. Tee times start on Friday at 8:30 a.m. PT.
