Portland, Ore. -- Former Husky women's golfer Paige Mackenzie is tied for 25th after the first round of the LPGA's Safeway Classic at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course in North Plains, Ore.

Mackenzie, a former UW All-American who competed at Washington from 2001-06, shot a 2-under 70 and is six strokes behind leader Beth Bader. Bader shot a blistering 8-under 64 on Friday.

Mackenzie, from Yakima, Wash., shot out of the gates on fire and got as far down as 5-under par after 14 holes before a bogey on No. 15 and double bogey on No. 17 brought her closer to par.

Another former Husky, Louise Friberg, is also competing in the event being held outside of Portland. Friberg struggled to find her way and ended her day at 5-over 77.

Play resumes on Saturday, with Mackenzie teeing off at 12:54 p.m. and Friberg teeing off at 12:43 p.m. Mackenzie is in a three-some that includes 2008 tournament champion Cristie Kerr.

Go Huskies!
