UW Women In 23rd Place at NCAA Golf Finals
May 22, 2001 Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. - The Washington women's golf team is in 23rd place of 24 teams after the first round of the NCAA Championships at the El Campeon Golf Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The Huskies recorded a 27-over par score of 315. Oklahoma State shot 5-over 293 to grab the early lead in the 72-hole tournament. UCLA is second at 295 and USC is third at 296. Washington was led by senior Elisha Au, who shot 3-over 75 to finish in a tie for 32nd place. Husky junior Kelli Kamimura, who led Washington in stroke average this season, shot 7-over 79 and is tied for 83rd. Washington's other scores included an 80 by Michelle Grafos, an 81 by Louise Friberg and an 83 by Lindsay Morgan. Only three players managed to break par of the first day of play at the championship. UCLA's Laura Moffat took the early lead for medalist honors with an opening-round 69. Oklahoma State's Maria Boden and Pepperdine's Lindsey Wright are tied for second a 2-under 70. There is a 10-way tie for fourth place at even-par 72. The second round of the tournament takes place Tuesday when the Huskies will switch to an afternoon tee time after being in the first group of teams to tee off on Tuesday.
