Ruling Thwarts Women's Golfers Bid for NCAAs
May 8, 1999 HOUSTON - A crucial rules interpretation kept Washington's women's golf team from making a third straight trip to the NCAA Championships as the Huskies finished tied for 12th at the NCAA West Regional. Washington matched Oregon carding a 932 over 54 holes at Pine Forest Country Club, but was just two strokes behind San Jose State's final qulifying score of 930. The deciding ruling came on the third hole when it was discovered that senior Jennifer Stapleton had 15 clubs in her bag, one over the 14-club limit. Consequently, she was penalized four strokes, two strokes per hole for each hole she had completed. The extra club was not owned by Stapleton and it is unknown who placed the club in the bag or when it was placed there. The club, a putter, is believed to have belonged to the guest of member that played yesterday afternoon. Head coach Mary Lou Mulflur has appealed to the NCAA golf committee, but all rules decisions are final. Elisha Au and Kelli Kamimura each finished the season strong, finishing in the top-25 at the tournament. Au fired 71 to complete the 54-hole tournament in a three-way tie for 22nd with an 11-over-par 227. Freshman All-Pac-10 selection Kelli Kamimura was just one stroke back of her teammate with a 12-over 228, matching Au's 73 in Saturday's final round. Senior Paola Bellotti finished up her Washington career tied for 66th after registering an 83 to finish with a 240. Andrea Cordova tied for 92nd with a 249. Jenna Daniels of Arizona won medaist honors, with a 5-under-par 211, four strokes in front of Grace Park (ASU) and Angie Yoon (Nevada). Southern California placed three players in the top-5 winning the tournament with a 15-over score of 879, 11 strokes ahead of second place Arizona. Arizona State was third with an 893, followed by TCU with 904 and Stanford with 909. Pepperdine, Tulsa, New Mexico State, Texas, Oklahoma and San Jose State are the other schools that will represent the West Region at the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla., May 20-23.
