Huskies Shoots School Record to Finish Fifth at Pac-10 Golf
April 25, 2001 Tempe, AZ - Led by junior Kelli Kamimura's third-place finish, the Husky women's golf team placed fifth at the Pac-10 Championships played at Arizona State's Karsten Golf Course. Washington set a Husky record on the final day of the tournament by turning in a score of 288, the lowest 18-hole team score in school history. The Huskies' final score of 890 tied a school record for lowest tournament score that was set earlier this season. Kamimura shot 2-under par 70 on Wednesday to finish with a 54-hole score of 1-under par 215. Her third-place finish was the best ever at the Pac-10s by a Husky golfer. Kamimura's finish earned her first-team All-Pac-10 honors. She was also a first-team all-conference selection in 1999 as a freshman. Second-ranked Arizona held off Stanford to win the Pac-10 title for the second straight year and for the fourth time in five years. The Wildcats shot 1-under 287 on Wednesday to finish the tournament at 873 while the Cardinal turned in a score of 876. Arizona State was third at 883 and USC was fourth at 886. Individually, Arizona freshman Lorena Ochoa captured medalist honors, edging out teammate and fellow freshman Natalie Gulbis in a sudden-death playoff that lasted two holes. Both players finished the tournament at three-under par 213. In the first hole of playoff, each player earned par on the 18th hole (par 4, 370 yards), while Ochoa, the conference freshman of the year, sank a birdie putt on the par 4, 352-yard ninth hole to take home conference medalist honors. Husky senior Elisha Au posted the team's best score of the tournament by shooting 3-under par 69 on Wednesday to tie for 18th place with a score of 224. It was her lowest round of the season and tied her career best score. Washington's other scores included a 25th-place finish by Louise Friberg at 227, a 36th-place finish by Lindsay Morgan at 230 and a 48th-place finish by Bianca Clark at 237. Michele Grafos, who was competing as an individual, shot 70 on Wednesday to place 31 with a score of 229. "It just shows you how tough this conference is that we can go out and tie our school record for a tournament and still finish fifth," said Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "This was a nice finish for our team and it gives us some momentum heading into the NCAA regionals." Washington returns to action May 10-12 at the NCAA Regionals at a site to be determined. NCAA Regional selections will be made next week.
