Women's Golf Moves Up at NCAA Championships

May 21, 1998

MADISON, Wisc. -- Washington's women's golf team carded a season-best 298 Thursday in the second round of competition at the NCAA Championships. The Huskies moved into 15th place with a 36-hole total of 601. Arizona State is running away with the tournament holding a 13-stroke lead over second place Arizona. Both Arizona State and Arizona carded 288 in the second round on the 6,033-yard University Ridge Golf Course.

Washington was led by the play of another freshman in round two. Julia Smith stroked her season-best with a 72 after carding 82 in Wednesday's first round. Elisha Au, also a freshman, maintained her stellar play carding a 2-over par 74, after posting one-under in the first round. Au remains as the UW's top player in the tournament, resting for the second straight day in a tie for 12th place overall. The Huskies also got help from Jennifer Stapleton as she matched a season-best 75. Andrea Cordova completed the Washington with a 77 after an even-par first round. Cordova's 5-over par score places her in a tie for 36th overall.

Arizona State's freshman sensation Grace Park opened up a four stroke lead, shooting 65 for the second straight day. USC's Jennifer Rosales is second with 134. Ten players in the 100 person field are under-par after two rounds.

The third of four rounds will be played Friday at the University Ridge Golf Course. Action can be seen live on ESPN2 starting at 10 a.m. (PST).
