Women's Golf Qualifies for NCAA Championships
May 9, 1998 STANFORD, Calif. -- The Washington women's golf team qualified for its second straight NCAA Championships, finishing ninth at the West Regional at Stanford, Calif. The Huskies had their best outing of the season, carding 911 for the 54-hole tournament on the par-73 Stanford Golf Course. Arizona won the tournament with a 5-under 871, 15 strokes better than second place Arizona State.
Washington posted a final round 307, led by the two freshman and a sophomore. Freshman Elisha Au fired a 75 during the final round to finish a plus-7 for the tournament and in a tie for 23rd. Teammate Julia Smith, also a freshman, carded a 76 to finish with 229 in a tie for 40th. Sophomore Andrea Cordova finished off with three sub-80 rounds with a 78 in the final round to finish tied for 47th. Paola Bellotti rounded out the Washington scoring with an 83 to place 50th. Jennifer Stapleton carded her second straight 78 to finish tied for 69th.
Arizona State freshman Grace Park captured the individual title with a 7-under par 212. Park carded an even-par 73 on the final day of play.
It is the third time in the past four seasons that the Huskies have qualified for the NCAA Championships, which begin May 21 in Madision, Wisc.
The Washington men's golf team will compete in its NCAA West Regional, beginning May 14 at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
