San Diego, Calif. - The Husky women's golf team combined to shoot 313 (+25) in the first round of the rain-shortened Battle at Rancho Bernardo and find themselves tied for 13th out of 16 teams. With the tournament condensed to a total of 36 holes, the 17th-ranked Huskies have some work to do to make up some ground in Tuesday's final round at the Championship Golf Course.

"We just need to play with a little more swag," Husky Coach Mary Lou Mulflur said from San Diego, where the rain let up after forcing the cancellation of Sunday's first round. "We are good. We are just not acting like we are as good as we are.

"We just need to get our swag back," she continued, "It's the simplest way I can put it."

The Huskies came out of the gate with some giddy up; their counting scores had them at +7 as they made the turn on No. 18.

But, the second nine was a different story. The team collectively was +24 over the final nine holes and had to count 17 of those strokes towards the team total.

Coach Mulflur believes that the team's inflated score was attributed to several factors, but was definitely an anomaly of a `perfect' storm.

T13 Washington 313 313
T27 Kelli Bowers (2) 76 76
T37 SooBin Kim (1) 77 77
T48 Jennifer Yang (3) 78 78
T74 Sadena Parks (5) 82 82
T80 Cyd Okino (4) 83 83

"We had four girls shoot in the 40's on the second nine," Mulflur stated. "That's absurd.

"We're good. We can compete with anybody in the country. We showed that this fall."

Individually, sophomore Kelli Bowers is standing best for the Huskies. She shot a 76 at the par-72 course and is tied for 27th at +4. Bowers made the turn at even par, but was 4-over on the second nine.

SooBin Kim is one stroke back of Bowers at +5. She too made the turn at even par, but had three bogeys and a double on the second nine. Kim is tied for 37th.

Jennifer Yang shot 78 and is tied for 48th.

Sadena Parks, playing in her first tournament since the fall, shot 82 and is tied for 74th. Freshman Cyd Okino shot 83 and is tied for 80th.

Tulane leads the field after shooting 293. They are two shots ahead of Arizona State and USC.

Tulane is also one-two in the individual standings. Maribel Lopez Porras fired a 3-under 69 and has a one-stroke lead over teammate Gemma Dryburgh.

Tomorrow's final round commences at 8:30.
