Huskies Release Non-Conference Schedule
July 30, 2012
SEATTLE - The Washington women's basketball program released the non-conference portion of its schedule today. It features a variety of challenging opponents and the renewal of an intra-city rivalry. Highlighting the home portion of the schedule are five games against competition from the West Coast, beginning with the regular-season opener versus St. Mary's on Nov. 9. Washington will also host Pepperdine on Nov. 27 and then San Diego State on Dec. 5, marking the start of a three-game homestand. Following the game against the Aztecs - which completes a home-and-home with the Mountain West foe - the Huskies will welcome UC Santa Barbara to Seattle on Dec. 15, and then Idaho on Dec. 16. The Huskies will be challenged on the road, undertaking a schedule that features two cross-country trips. UW begins the road portion of its schedule with a quick bus ride to Lower Queen Anne to face Seattle University at Key Arena. This marks the resumption of the series that was put on hold because of scheduling conflicts last season. This will be the first time since SU moved to Division I that the program will have a conference affiliation, as the Redhawks will now be competing in the Western Athletic Conference. The premier road game is a 2,180-mile trek to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech on Dec. 21, which completes a home-and-home contract with the two schools. The Yellow Jackets are one of the elite programs in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and are coming off a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament last year. Other road dates include trips to Long Beach State (Nov. 18) and Big Ten foe Wisconsin (Nov. 21), as the Huskies will be making their first trip to Madison since 2001. Rounding out the road schedule is a trip to the Rose City for a game against West Coast Conference foe Portland on Nov. 29, as well as a date at UC Davis on Dec. 28. Fans will be able to get their first look at the 2012-13 edition of the Huskies on Oct. 30 when the program welcomes Concordia to Montlake for an exhibition matchup. Helped by a deep run in the Women's National Invitational Tournament, Washington won 20 games for the first time since 2003. With the addition of the program's first McDonald's All-America recruit in Katie Collier, along with the return of Kristi Kingma from an ACL injury, the Huskies are hoping they can pick up right where they left off last season.
