Huskies Accept Postseason Bid For WBI
March 15, 2010
SEATTLE - The University of Washington women's basketball team has at least one more game left on its schedule.
On Monday, the Huskies (12-17, 7-12) accepted a bid to participate as one of the 16 teams in the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI), and will host Portland on Wednesday night on March 17 (6 p.m.) at Bank of America Arena. The Pilots finished 18-12, 7-7 in the West Coast Conference.
Head coach Tia Jackson saw the WBI as a chance to give a young team added seasoning.
"We're thrilled that we still have an opportunity to play in front of our fans again," Jackson said. "Our senior leadership and the steady improvement of our youth have been tremendous over the course of this season. It is truly a blessing that we get this chance to grow and learn even more. Thanks to the WBI for wanting us to be a part of its inaugural year."
The WBI is a postseason tournament broken into two regions with eight teams in each region. All teams will play under a single-elimination format on campus sites with the higher seed hosting games each round. Should the Huskies advance, they would travel to either Texas A&M Corpus Christi or Cal-State Bakersfield on March 20 or 21, depending on who wins that side of the bracket. The championship game is scheduled for March 28 or 29.
This season marks the first postseason appearance for the Huskies in four years, as well as the first for Jackson.
The Pilots and Huskies faced six common opponents this year. Portland lost to Eastern Washington, Oregon, BYU and Gonzaga while beating Sacramento State and Seattle University.
