Feb. 22, 2001 Seattle - University of Washington senior guard Megan Franza has been named a first-team selection to the 2001 CoSIDA/Verizon Academic All-District VIII Women's Basketball team. It is the second consecutive year Franza has been named to the team, which includes 10 members, five each on the first and second teams. A psychology major, Franza has a 3.79 grade point average. She currently leads Washington in scoring with a 15.8 points per game average. In order to be eligible for the Academic All-America honors , a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must be a starter or a key reserve and be in at least their second season of athletic and academic eligibility. Joining Franza on the first team are Annie Garrison (Santa Clara), Victoria Harrod (Wahington State), Millie Kimpton (Pacific), and Katie Nyseth (Washington State). Second team members include Kayte Christensen (UCSB), Leah Combs (Arizona State), Jessica Malone (Gonzaga), Darci Pemberton (Idaho), and Christine Urbanski (Idaho State). First-team members will be included on the national Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team national winners will be announced Thursday, March 15. A total of 47 eligible student-athletes were nominated by 23 different schools on the District VIII ballot. CoSIDA members in the states of California, Hawaii, Alaska, British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, and Utah were responsible for voting. Washington, currently in second place in the Pac-10 Conference, hosts California Thursday at 7 p.m. and Stanford Saturday at 1 p.m.
