Women's Basketball Defeats Iowa
Nov. 15, 1998 SEATTLE -- The Washington women's basketball team opened its 1998-99 season with an 84-76 victory over Iowa in front 1,963 fans in non-conference action at Hec Emdundson Pavilion Sunday afternoon.
Washington was paced by the senior All-America tandem of Amber Hall and Jamie Redd, who had 21 and 20 points respectively. Hall made hers a double-double as she also pulled down 11 rebounds. Malinda Lynch was one point shy of her career high with 16 points in the game.
The Huskies carried a 48-36 lead at the half and opened the second period with an 8-0 run to increase their lead to 18. They moved their lead to 24 points (67-43) with 12:49 remaining in the game. Iowa followed that with a 22-7 run of its own over the next eight and one-half minutes. Cara Consuegra scored 14 of her team-high 19 points in that span.
Washington shot 40 percent (33-81) from the field and committed just 12 turnovers in the game. The Huskies also passed out 23 assists and had seven blocks, each more than in any game last season. Iowa hit 42 percent (24-57) of its shots from the field.
Washington next travels to Utah for a non-conference game against BYU, Nov. 20 in Provo.
