No. 6 Cal Tops Washington, 78-50
March 2, 2013
SEATTLE -- Washington (19-10, 11-7) finished off the regular season, falling to No. 6 California (27-2, 16-1), 78-50. The Dawgs struggled against a big and athletic Cal team that dominated play on the glass, outrebounding Washington, 56-22.
Cal led 39-28 at halftime, although Washington made a run just before the break. Down 39-20, the Dawgs closed on an 8-0 run. Mercedes Wetmore drove and completed a three-point play, before Jazmine Davis made a jumper and a 3-pointer to get Washington within striking distance.
In the second half, the Huskies continued to make things interesting by cutting into the Golden Bears lead. Kristi Kingma scored five-straight points and Davis added a free throw to make the score 41-34 with 17:18 left in the half.
From there Cal went on an 8-0 run to widen the lead back to 15 points and Washington would not get within striking distance again. The Bears were just too big, physical and athletic in the paint for Washington to have an answer.
The starting frontline for Cal of Gennifer Brandon and Talia Caldwell combined for 34 points and 28 rebounds as they both had significant size advantages down low.
Davis led the Dawgs with 19 points on 7-19 shooting. She was able to get by the perimeter defenders, but forced to take tough shots with the size of Cal in the paint. Davis added five rebounds and three assists, while making 3-5 from downtown.
Also in double figures for the Dawgs were Kingma and Aminah Williams with 10 points apiece.
The Dawgs finish the regular season with 19 wins, including 11 in conference. The 11 conference wins were the most since 2006-07 when UW also finished 11-7.
Washington will now participate in the Pac-12 Tournament and be the No. 5 seed. The Dawgs will get 12th-seeded Oregon in the first round, which begins Thursday.
