Dec. 29, 1997 SEATTLE, Wash. -- The No. 8 Washington women's basketball team came from behind late in the game for the first time this season and defeated Texas, 78-72, in its final non-conference game in front of 5,541 fans at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. Washington remains unbeaten for the season at 9-0 while Texas snaps a three-game win streak to drop to 4-5 overall. UW junior Amber Hall led the way for the Huskies, recording her seventh double-double of the year with a game-high 22 points and 16 rebounds. UT point guard Vanessa Wallace led the Lady Longhorns with 20 points. The Huskies, who trailed at the break for only the second time this season, used a 17-2 run down the stretch to seal the victory. UT held a 10 point lead, 50-40, with 14:03 remaining before Molly Hills started the run with the second of two free throws. Jamie Redd followed with a layin for two of her five points in the stretch as she finished with 21 points for the game. Malinda Lynch evened the score at 52 on two free throws with 9:29 remaining and then Gena Pelz put the Huskies ahead for good on a layup at the 9:13 mark. Wallace pulled Texas within three points three times in the final two minutes, with a layup, two free throws and then an assist to Dee Smith at the :58 second mark but Washington hit five of eight free throws in the final minute to close the game. Texas led 36-32 at halftime and shot 45.3 percent for the game while holding UW to 32.1 shooting. The Huskies won the battle of the boards, 57-36 and were 22-of-37 from the free throw line to UT's 13-of-20. The Huskies open Pacific-10 Conference play with a game at Washington State, Sat., Jan. 3.The game will be televised live at 1 p.m. PST on Fox Sports Net. |
