Drew, Kendrick Advance in NCAA Singles Play
May 26, 1999 Athens, GA -- Washington men's tennis players, senior Eric Drew and sophomore Robert Kendrick, won their respective first-round singles matches at the NCAA singles championship held in Athens, Ga. earlier today. Drew, ranked 58th, improved his record to 20-7 with a three-set 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 upset win over 34th-ranked Alex Waske of San Diego State. Drew faces 16th-ranked Johann Jooste of Baylor tomorrow. Jooste defeated Drew earlier in the year, 6-2, 6-3 in the finals of the H.E.B. Classic in Corpus Cristi, Texas. Kendrick, ranked 10th, defeated Baylor's 37th-ranked Pawel Gajdzik 6-1, 7-5 to improve his record to 31-8. Kendrick faces North Carolina State's 49th-ranked Roberto Bracone tomorrow. Drew and Kendrick will begin play for the doubles championship tomorrow. The 14th-ranked duo (16-4) take on 37th-ranked Daniel Andersson and Frank Moser of Virginia Commonwealth.
