Men's Tennis Falls to Georgia, 4-3
May 16, 1999 Athens, GA - Washingtons 24th-ranked mens tennis team (17-9) lost two of three deciding three-set matches to suffer a season-ending loss to fifth-ranked Georgia (22-5) in an NCAA regional final held in Athens, Ga. Tied at 2-2, the Huskies could only muster one three-set win before falling in the No. 1 and 3 singles slots. Washington won the doubles point to begin the match but soon trailed 2-1 after Georgia wins in the No. 4 and 5 singles slots. Sophomore Jeremy Berman (22-9) tied the score at 2-2 with a 7-6, 6-4 win in No. 6 singles. The match then came down to the top-three singles positions. Senior Eric Drew (19-7) gave the Huskies a 3-2 lead with a 6-3, 0-6, 7-5 No. 2 singles win over Bulldog Talito Corrales. However, in less than a minute, the Huskies lost the No. 1 and 3 singles matches to dash their hopes of an NCAA Championship appearance. Tenth-ranked sophomore Robert Kendrick (30-8) lost a third-set tie-breaker 8-5 and fell 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 to eighth-ranked Hisham Hemeda in No. 1 singles followed by Andy Posavacs 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 loss in the No. 3 singles slot to 24th-ranked Chad Carlson. Drew and Kendrick will return to Athens, Ga. May 26-30 to compete for the NCAA singles and doubles championship.
